This week we took our understanding of patterns a bit further. We explored both geometric and numeric patterns. We looked closely at various patterns - repeating, increasing, decreasing, increasing/decreasing and determined the rule(s) the pattern was following. Through discussion and guided practice students were introduced to all of these patterns, challenged to extend the patterns, and then they were sent on a patterns scavenger hunt!
See if you can identify the pattern and state the rule!

Forming Strong Answers
This week we worked on answering questions in complete sentences and using part of the questions to help formulate our answers. The goal was for our answer to be so well stated that even if someone didn't know the question, they could derive understanding from the answer. Here is an example:
Q: What caused Carl Stotz to create little league baseball?
A: (Students' original answers...)
"Because he couldn't play with the big boys when he was younger."
"He couldn't play with bigger kids."
A: (Students' new answer using part of the question to help formulate a solid answer.)
Carl Stotz created little league baseball because when he was young he was never
allowed to play baseball with the older kids. He wanted to create a league for
young boys to be able to play baseball.
Now if you never knew the question, but read this answer, wouldn't you still be able to derive understanding from the answer?
Keep up the great work second graders!!!
