Due to a week of instruction being lost to inclement weather, I did not meet with my 2nd grade students. This allowed homeroom teachers to catch up with instruction as well as allowed me to complete the testing / assessing missed last week. Thank you for your understanding!

This week we explored cause and effect. We looked at several passages and answered cause and effect questions - focusing on thinking about "Why" something happens or the "reason" for sometime happening as the cause, and "What" happens or the "result" of something as being the effect. Following some group practice and discussion, students completed a Cause & Effect Scoot game. In the game they had to read multiple passages and answer cause and effect questions relating to events in the passage. The last three cards were a challenge as they had to look at a picture and identify a cause and effect relationship within the picture. Here are some examples: Our focus in math this week included subtraction with regrouping and subtraction across zeros using larger numbers (three digits or more). Students participated in 4 stations: Station 1: Pick a Path Subtraction Students had to solve subtraction problems to find the ones with a difference of 25. As they solved, the problems with a difference of 25 lead Snowy the Snowman to his gloves! Station 2: QR Code Scavenger Hunt Students used iPads to scan QR codes and get a subtraction problem. They then had to solve the problem and locate the answer on another card. That card then provided the next QR code to scan for the next problem! Station 3: Online Practice Station 4: Race to the Finish Line Subtraction Game Students worked in teams to solve subtraction problems in the hopes of moving their race car one space closer to the finish line! GT - February 16-20I will not be meeting with my GT clusters or working with students in homerooms next week because:
1. Monday is a holiday. 2. I am at a Children's Engineering Conference on Thursday and Friday. 3. I am going to reserve Tuesday and Wednesday to complete a chunk of spring eligibility screening in order to minimize the amount of GT service time lost in the weeks to come. Please expect services to resume the week of February 23. Thanks for your understanding as I try to screen spring referrals and provide instruction to already identified students! As second grade finishes their unit on fractions and begins their study of computation, we played an exciting game called Penguin Pounce where students had to combine three addends and regroup when necessary! We started by modeling the addition process with place value blocks and then transitioned into using the standard algorithm. As students played, if they disagreed over the sum of the three addends, they used the place value blocks to check their work. Great job this week!
After wrapping up our unit on fractions we spent some time this week enjoying a Math Carnival! Students were given a cumulative review packet covering all of the math concepts taught so far this year. As students completed a series of 4 problems, they were able to play a fun carnival game and win prizes! Students were super focused and excited! What a great way to review and have fun!
