Second graders have been hard at work the last three weeks!
In math we wrapped up our unit on Place Value. Students worked with rounding numbers that extended into the thousands to the nearest tens, hundreds, and thousands. They gained conceptual understanding of rounding by using number lines in order to visually see where the number falls on the number line and which friendly number it is closer to.
Additionally in math, students worked on figuring out mystery numbers! In one activity, students were given a set of digits and asked to make numbers using those digits that matched a clue. Here is an example:

The next math challenge students had was to figure out two mystery numbers based on a set of clues. Working through these problems helped us understand how to problem solve one step at a time by creating an organized list of information from which to eliminate & choose as you work to find the mystery numbers. Here is an example:
During reading / LA, students took a step back from the famous person project in order to refine their research skills and practice sorting information for the project under the correct heading (childhood, contributions, interesting facts). Students were struggling with doing quality research and understanding where to put facts that they did find about their famous person. Additionally, students needed redirection on how to properly engage in the collaborative features of Google. To help in these areas, we worked as a group to take information about Helen Keller and sort it under the correct header. We also talked more about how we work together to create a Google Doc or a Google Slide. Mrs. Verlander helped us with the Google side, while Mrs. Duke and I worked with the students on improving their research skills. Students will not be given any more time past this week to complete the projects.
