Last week I saw my second graders for math. They have been working hard on learning how to add and subtract with larger numbers using various methods. This computation includes regrouping!
My challenge to the group was to find the answer to the following question:
Where do fish keep their money?
In order to find the answer, students travel around the room solving multi-step word problems involving addition and subtraction of larger numbers. For each computation problem they successfully solved, they obtained a letter to fill in a blank of the answer. After solving all 12 problems, students knew where fish keep their money - in a river bank!
