Second graders have been working hard these last few weeks as they wrapped up their fractions unit with a fun fraction review activity! Students were given a treasure map and charged with earning enough stamps to get from start to finish! They did this by answering some tough fraction questions like the following:
Our next adventure had us exploring probability. Students had already learned some probability vocabulary words like certain, impossible, likely, unlikely, and as likely as unlikely. Our next step was learning how to express probability as a fraction (numerator = favorable outcomes, denominator = total possible outcomes). After some practice writing the probability as a fraction, students connected probability to a number line. They quickly recognized impossible as 0 on the number line and certain as 1. From there, they determined that the 1/2 mark was as likely as unlikely and that unlikely events would be represented by fractions between 0 and 1/2 while likely events would be represented by fractions between 1/2 and 1.
Students were then given scenarios and the probability of an event happening within that scenario expressed as a fraction. Using the fraction, they had to determine if the event was certain, impossible, likely, unlikely, or as likely as unlikely. I was so impressed with how quickly students were able to do this! Nice Job!
Finally, second graders have been hard at work reading the book, There's an Owl in the Shower. In this fun story, students have been introduced to what life is like for the spotted owl living in the old growth forests of Fresta, California. They have also learned about the effects logging can have on the environment. As we read through the novel, students are answering comprehension questions. They are doing an amazing job!
