During encore time this week we continued to flex out deductive thinking skills as we tackled some more logic puzzles. The puzzles this week really had us thinking because students had to make inferences not just based on the clues given, but also based on the information collected in the logic grid. We also worked on determining how to label parts of a logic grid based on the scenario and clues given.
In math, we continued to use related facts to help us solve for an unknown value. Students where sent on a scavenger hunt around the room. They started at a word problem and had to write an equation to match the word problem. They then used related facts to solve for the variable. Finally, they searched for the variable's value on the other scavenger hunt cards placed around the room. When they found it, it lead them to the next problem needing to be solved! They did a great job!
In reading / language arts, we continued to explore declarative sentences by being declarative detectives! Students worked in pairs, to visit a series of clue cards. The clue card contained either a declarative sentence, a fragment, or a question. Using what they know about declarative sentences, student evaluated each clue and determined if it was a declarative sentence. If the clue wasn't a declarative, students had to provide proof as to why it didn't fit the bill!
