sThis week in reading, students accepted the challenge of becoming Weather Detectives! The McGhee Weather Company has been collecting weather data for years, and suddenly it's gone missing! Students will us their critical thinking and deductive reasoning skills to comb through evidence and determine which suspect is guilty of the crime! Along the way, they will be learning about key elements of the weather and collecting their own set of weather data.
Students started the unit by creating their case files and learning about the weather instruments used to track the weather. We are lucky weather detectives at CHES because our school is equipped with an NBC12 Weathernet WeatherBug Tracking Station. We used this technology to find out the data needed to complete our very own weather logs!

Seaside Diner - Variables in Equations
Our adventures as Aquatic Investigators continued this week as we explored the concept of variables in equations.
After defining what a variable is in an equation, we then solved number sentences with variables where we were given the value of the variable in order to create equation. Here is an example:
What is the value of 3 + x if x = 7?
3 + 7 = 10
So...3 + x = 10
Next, students were given a series of number sentences and a menu to the Seaside Diner. The menu contained the values of the variables in the number sentences the students were charged with solving. Students had to use the menu to find the value of the variable, plug the value in to the number sentence, and solve. Here is an example:
Seaside Diner Menu
Hamburger (h) $6 French Fries (f) $2
Fish Tacos (t) $9 Beans (b) $1
3t + 3b = ______ 2h + t + 2f = ______
Through our explorations, we learned that multiplication is really repeated addition! The students did a great job! Next on our dive is trying to find the value of variables in an equation!
