We continued our adventures "Into the Unknown" last week by writing equations using dominoes. Each domino represented two numbers that could be added together to give a sum - the trick - students had to use two dominoes to make an equation that represented a given value. Since two (or more) dominoes were being used to build an equation, students were introduced to the use of parenthesis in equations. After a bit of guided practice, students worked with their math mates to write equations for given values. Here are some examples:
Equations Equaling 8:
(2 + 2) + (0 + 4) = 8 (5 + 5) - (1 - 1) = 8 (4 + 4) + (0 + 0) = 8
(5 + 0 ) + (3 + 0) = 8 (6 + 3) - (1 + 0) = 8 (1 + 6) + (1 + 0) = 8
In reading / language arts, we focused on context clues. Students played a fun game of BANG to practice using context clues to determine the meaning of an unfamiliar word. Each students reached in to a bucket of cards. On their card was either the word BANG or a sentence containing a nonsense word. If they got a sentence card, they read it to the group and told us the meaning of the nonsense word. They also had to justify how they knew the meaning by identifying the context clues that helped them. If they did this correctly, they got to keep the card. Any time a student pulled a BANG card, all of the cards they had earned to that point were put back into the bucket. Any students with cards in the end won!
By playing this fun game, students really began to understand where to look for context clues and how to use those clues to give meaning to unfamiliar words!
