Welcome back! I hope your spring break was wonderful and relaxing! Students came back this week ready to learn and grow!
Unfortunately, I was unable to see my 2nd graders for math this week due to Career Day (which was a WONDERFUL event for all students at CHES), but we will gather for math again next week and begin exploring fractions!
What we were able to do this week was get together to flex our writing and creative thinking skills by completing a fun writing assignment! Students chose one object from a variety of objects - straws, soda can, boot, paper towel tube, jump rope, watering can, rubber glove. Their job was to come up with a list of new ways to use the object they chose. Next, students had to write a paragraph, outlining new uses for the object! We discussed as a group how good writers start their paragraph (with a hook) and brainstormed a topic sentence together. Then, we discussed how we would organize the body of our paragraph with three main details, each followed by a sentence or two that told more about the detail. Finally, students came up with a great concluding sentence that restated the main idea and brought closure to their writing. Here is the model that we did together as a group before students set out on their own:
Have you ever thought about other uses for a flyswatter? A flyswatter could be used as a fan. On a hot day, just grab your flyswatter and starting flapping it around to cool yourself off. You can also turn a flyswatter into a catapult! Hold the handle in one hand and place an object on the head of the flyswatter. Pull back on the head and the let it go to watch the object go flying. Finally, a flyswatter can be used as a Smartboard tool. If you have to tap something high up on the Smartboad, use a flyswatter to reach high enough. Now you some new uses for a flyswatter.
