This week in second grade, students practiced their computation skills by participating a fun Computation Carnival. As students tackled various types of computation review questions, they were able to play carnival games set up around the classroom for prizes! The students were motivated and very detailed in showing their thinking for each computation problem they faced. It was fun to see them all engaged and focused!
During our reading time together, we practiced writing strong declarative sentences and identifying the subject and the predicate within each sentence. We also used our story about Jackie Robinson to practice locating answers in the text (finding textual support) and writing answers to comprehension questions that are detailed and declarative!
Here is an example of one questions the students answered:
Q: According the author, how is Jackie Robinson a hero like Charles Lindbergh and Neil
Armstrong?
Students started by locating support for their answer in the text. Once this support was found. they then used key parts of the question to construct their answer.
A: Jackie Robinson was a hero like Charles Lindbergh and Neil Armstrong
because he did something that no one else had done before.
(textual evidence / support)
We talked about how our answers, if constructed well and with detail, will allow anyone to understand what is being talked about - even without having seen the question!
We will continue with this skill next week!
