The first week was busy for second grade! Students completed a pre-assessment showing their understanding of addition and subtraction problem solving. Based on the results, we will be ready to tackle some algebra next week with addition and subtraction!
We also spent time this week talking about how to be "bucket fillers." Bucket fillers are people who are caring, kind, thoughtful, nice, helpful, etc. They do and say things to others to make them feel good, thus filling the invisible bucket that everyone carries with them. Make sure to ask your student about this "bucket" and what it means to be a bucket filler. You can even practice being bucket fillers at home!
Finally, second graders enjoyed working in collaborative groups to complete a cup stacking STEM challenge. Students had to create a tower of plastic cups with five cups as the base. This may seem like an easy challenge, except students were not allowed to touch the cups with ANY part of their body! The only tools they had to use were 1 rubber band and 1 piece of yarn (per student in the group). It was great to see the students thinking critically about the problem, sharing ideas for how to solve the problem, communicating, testing out ideas, and persevering!
