Due to a week of instruction being lost to inclement weather, I did not meet with my 1st Grade students. This allowed homeroom teachers to catch up with instruction as well as allowed me to complete the testing / assessing missed last week. Thank you for your understanding!

I will not be meeting with my GT clusters or working with students in homerooms next week because:
1. Monday is a holiday. 2. I am at a Children's Engineering Conference on Thursday and Friday. 3. I am going to reserve Tuesday and Wednesday to complete a chunk of spring eligibility screening in order to minimize the amount of GT service time lost in the weeks to come. Please expect services to resume the week of February 23. Thanks for your understanding as I try to screen spring referrals and provide instruction to already identified students! This week we applied our understanding of fact families to help us solve for a mystery number in an equation! After modeling and doing some guided practice, students were then sent on a scavenger hunt! Each student started at a card around the room. They solved for "N" and the looked for that number on a card somewhere else in the room. That card then gave them their next equation to solve! They did a great job applying their understanding of fact families in order to solve for "N"!
This week we played a game of Roll & Write to review fact family concepts. Students worked in teams to role a large die, each side of which contained three numbers. They then had to create a fact family using those three numbers. As play progressed, Mrs. Owen threw out even larger numbers (some to the hundreds and thousands) to see if they could apply their understanding of the patterns we see in fact families to make a fact family with larger numbers. This also proved how skilled the first graders are at comparing larger numbers! Way to go kiddos! Main Idea & Detail Paragraphs Published! This week we published our writing samples involving main idea and detail. I am so proud of how hard the students worked! From receiving their main idea and researching supporting details on Pebble Go, to writing a rough draft and typing up their final copy, the students really put their best effort into their work! All work including the graphic organizer used for note taking during research, the rough draft, and a copy of the final published piece will be coming home soon! Way to go!
This week we began to explore fact families. Students were put into groups of four and given a baggie full of number and symbol cards. Their challenge was to create four true number sentences using the cards given and all of the number sentences had to be different from each other. After some time to explore and problem solve together, students were able to create a fact family. Next we discussed the patterns we noticed within the fact families: (A) The greatest number comes at the end of an addition sentence. (B) The greatest number comes at the start of a subtraction sentence. (C) A fact family includes two addition and two subtraction sentences. After identifying these key elements, students were then given new sets of cards and charged with making the fact family. Next week we will play a fun game of Roll and Write using our knowledge of fact families!
