This week we began to explore fact families. Students were put into groups of four and given a baggie full of number and symbol cards. Their challenge was to create four true number sentences using the cards given and all of the number sentences had to be different from each other.
After some time to explore and problem solve together, students were able to create a fact family.
Next we discussed the patterns we noticed within the fact families:
(A) The greatest number comes at the end of an addition sentence.
(B) The greatest number comes at the start of a subtraction sentence.
(C) A fact family includes two addition and two subtraction sentences.
(A) The greatest number comes at the end of an addition sentence.
(B) The greatest number comes at the start of a subtraction sentence.
(C) A fact family includes two addition and two subtraction sentences.
After identifying these key elements, students were then given new sets of cards and charged with making the fact family. Next week we will play a fun game of Roll and Write using our knowledge of fact families!
