This week first graders began their study of geometry. During our time together, we discussed what geometry is and reviewed some basic 2D shapes - square, rectangle, circle, triangle. We identified the sides and vertices for each of these shapes, and then examined 3D shapes to see how our 2D shapes come together to form 3D shapes. Students were introduced to the concepts of faces, edges, and vertices with 3D shapes - rectangular solid, cube, cone, cylinder, square pyramid, and sphere!
Finally, students were shown their geometry choice board. This choice board gives students 9 options to show what they know about 2D and 3D shapes and is to be completed during math station time in the homeroom. Activities include creating riddles for shapes, experimenting with 3D shapes, writing a book about shapes, and creating shapes with pattern blocks!

Part / Whole Analogies
This week in language arts we explore part - whole and whole-part analogies. Students were given some examples and asked to explain the relationship between the words. After concluding that one word represented a part and the other represented a whole, students where then asked to complete sets of analogies showing the part-whole or whole-part relationship. Finally, students were given a cut & paste activity to apply what they had learned.
