This week we continued to construct paragraphs with strong main ideas and supporting details. We finished up our research of topics using Pebble Go then began transitioning from a graphic organizer to a rough draft paragraph. Next week we will complete our paragraphs and add illustrations! Great job first graders!
This week we focused on subtraction with double digit numbers (without regrouping). Students played a game called Sink or Swim with a partner. They selected a subtraction problem, then one partner solved using place value blocks while the other used the standard algorithm (and practiced lining the numbers up by place value in order to solve). Game cards were self checking and students either sank if they solved incorrectly, or swam if they solved correctly. They had a blast and did a great job subtracting carefully! Below are some sample problems and pictures of the kids playing!
This week students used Pebble Go to locate interesting facts about one of the following topics:
clouds moon phases water cycle animals in winter animals in fall These interesting facts had to serve as supporting details for the main idea the students were given on their topic. Students organized their research using a graphic organizer. Next, we will take our graphic organizers and use them to create solid paragraphs which contain a main idea and supporting details. |
