This week we received a postcard from Dr. Seuss encouraging us to read his famous story Green Eggs and Ham. After reading this fun story, we all pretended WE were the green eggs and ham. We drew a picture of our ourselves (as green eggs and ham) on a paper plate, then created a speech bubble in which we tried to convince friends not to eat us! The students really came up with some wonderful ideas, and their writing showed a lot of voice! Our green eggs and ham are on display just outside of Mrs. Dickinson's room!
Decomposing Numbers
This week in math we worked on word problems which required us to find multiple ways of decomposing a given number. After working several examples together, students then partnered up to complete a similar challenge. Through our work, we discussed strategies for tackling these types of problems, including starting with 1 + the number minus one, then moving to 2 + the number minus two, etc. We also discussed the importance of keeping our work organized. Students wrote all addend combinations in a chart. I was very proud of the students for beginning to see a pattern emerge as they were charting their number combinations. Many were able to use the pattern to finish finding all of the combinations instead of relying on manipulatives.
