This week in math we focused on telling time to the hour, half hour, and quarter hour. We learned the various ways you could read the time on a clock:
"on the hour"
"o'clock"
"__ thirty"
"half past __"
"__ fifteen"
"quarter past/after __"
"__ forty-five"
"quarter til/to __"
We also examined the placement of the hour hand on a clock as the minute hand makes its way around. After completing some notes for our math journals, students were given a contract to work on throughout the week. They could choose 3 activities from the contract (which contained nine options). Activities included:
Creating a Matching Game (matching analogue to digit times)
Writing a Story Involving Time
Creating a Poster of Important Time for the Class
Writing Story Problems with Time
Time Handouts
Computer Games with Time
Elapsed Time
Time Matching Games
Creating a Telling Time Board Game for Classmates to Play

Non-Fiction Text Feature Research Project
To reinforce our studies of non-fiction text features, we began a special project this week. Students will be designing a page for a class book about famous Americans. Their page must include the following non-fiction text features: heading, subheadings, picture, caption, and a timeline. For an added challenge, student must also include a moving part on their page! This week we set up the project, assigned famous Americans, and began researching! The students are excited and were very focused with their research!
