This week we continued working on double digit addition without regrouping. We practiced building the two digit numbers with place value blocks in order to understand the value of each digit in the numbers, then added them together. We also worked on lining up two digit numbers by the place value and adding the numbers beginning in the ones place without using the place value blocks. Great job fabulous first grade!
Main Idea & Details
In reading we worked on building an understanding of main idea and supporting details. Together, we read a passage about toys in the past and examined the details of each paragraph to help determine the main ideas for the paragraphs. We spent a good amount of time understanding the difference between the topic of a paragraph and the main idea.
Topic - what is the paragraph about
Main Idea - what does the author want us to know or understand about the topic
Here is an example of a paragraph we read together and found the topic and main idea for!
Most children did not have many toys. People made toys out of what they had. Some were made from wood. Some were made of cloth. And some were made of metal or clay. A child on a farm might have a rag doll. It would be made from left-over cloth. Or, the child might even have a doll made out of corn husks! More expensive dolls were made from porcelain. That is a special kind of clay.
