This week in math, students explored double digit addition with regrouping. We began our exploration using manipulative - place value blocks. We discussed some basic place value concepts, built the addends, and combined and made trades using the blocks in order to find sums. Students discovered that when adding double digit numbers, you must start in the ones place. Additionally, we worked on how the blocks translated into the standard algorithm. This involved practice with lining numbers up by place value and learning how to show regrouping when writing the problem mathematically on paper. Students did a great job!
Snow Much Fun!
We took a bit of a detour from our original plan of writing up the information we found when researching snow. Instead, we shared the data with the group verbally and then began a new project making a large snowball of indoor and outdoor activities to do on a snow day!
Students were given 10 blue and 10 white circles. They then had to fold them around a triangle they placed in the center. Next, students wrote one indoor (on white circles) or one outdoor (on blue circles) activity per circle. The circles will them be strategically glued together to create a giant snowball! This was a good review of some key geometry concepts on top of a fun writing assignment.
